GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION

Thassos lies at the northern-most end of the Aegean, in clear waters far from the burdens of modern humanity. Rooted in the sheltered bay of Kavala, Thassos enjoys a cool Aegean breeze as it hears the secret messages carried on the peaks of waves sent from the other islands, envious of its solitude and refusal to adopt the frenetic pace of the cities.

With Mount Ypsario (1,204 m) as its trademark, it has paraded through the ages scattering sweet, unheard-of sounds made by rustling leaves, lapping waves, buzzing bees and the bewitching song of the nightingales populating the fields and valleys to the accompaniment of the gurgling waters flowing year-round unimpeded to the sea.

The widely diverse vegetation covers the slopes of Mount Ypsario like a cloak. An abundance of pines, plane trees, firs, cedars, olive trees, oaks and laurels soften the sharp edges of the mountain, making the peak an ideal destination for fans of climbing and trekking. Countless flowers and shrubs cover the few treeless spots like a Persian rug. Its aromatic plants grow plentiful: oregano, sage, mint, rosemary, thyme and mountain tea.

The lacy coastline circles the lush green bouquet of the island like an intricately woven belt, keeping it safe from the ripples of modern threats.

HOW TO GET THERE

Thassos is connected by boat to Kavala and Keramoti, which is about 10 minutes from the airport at Chrysoupoli. The Thassos-Keramoti crossing takes 35-40 minutes and the Kavala-Prinos crossing about 1:15. Ferries run quite regularly for the convenience of travellers. Ferries are seaworthy and enable passengers to enjoy the trip along with hovering seagulls and the occasional dolphin dancing in the waves, willing to carry away the worries and burdens of the city people.
